Lots of music videos usually have a meaning behind them which is conveyed through the lyrics of the song, some may even have a story represented in the music video which is called a narrative. I have chosen two narratives to analyse and compare common features and also differences between. The first music video is ‘Jar of Hearts’ which was a debut single released in 2010 by Christina Perri. The second song I have chosen is ‘Naive’ by The Kooks which was realeased in 2006.
Both of these songs are quite slow paced therefore they also include slow editing cuts. Examples of these are fade in and fade outs which are used during both videos quite frequently. Jar of Hearts is quite a slow paced song throughout however Naive tends to speed up during the chorus where all the action is happening. This can portray the dramatic situation that the lead artist is in.
Both of the music videos are narrative as they are telling a story, they also have a similar storyline. In Jar of Hearts, Christina has walked a way from a broken down relationship and appears to be very lost and upset. Furthermore in the second video, the main artist is also in a broken down relationship and is also lost and upset however he does not want to walk away.
Through out both of the videos, lots of close up shots are taken. This is a good way to show the characters emotions and draw a connection between the artists and the audience. It can make them feel empathetic towards them, as if they can understand and really be involved in the situations they are experiencing.
Even though the songs are to do with quite similar situations, they are portrayed very differently. Jar of Hearts is very lyrical, with back up performers dancing in the style of contemporary to show the emotions. Christina also is very upset and is expressing her emotions when singing to the camera. However in The Kooks video, the lead singer is involved in a search for his girlfriend and there are scenes where he is happy and oblivious to what is happening behind his back. Although he is upset too, not the whole of this video is focused on him and his emotions with the camera aimed at him. Both of the music videos are non-diegetic as music was added into the narrative after the filming.
The clothing being worn by both artists convey they’re both are or were innocent people. In Jar o Hearts, Christina is wearing a white dress with dirt on it. The colour white suggest purity, so this may suggest that she was once pure but this got taken away from her - the dirt could resemble this. In addition to this, you can tell that the lead singer from The Kooks is also innocent from looking at his attire.
There is a real contrast within the scenery in both videos, In Naive, the scenery is very dark. It is set at a party with unnatural lighting however in the other video, the lighting is very natural but not much scenery is shown. The camera is focused more on the artist herself in Jar of Hearts, but as you can see in Naive, a fair share of scenery is shown too in order to set the scene for the narrative.
In conclusion, we can see that there are some very clear links between both of these music videos. The locations are very different however the stories behind are similar. Such as they are upset over their messed up relationships and portray their feelings through facial expressions which are shown through close up shots.
